# TrueNAS Documentation

> TrueNAS is an open-source network-attached storage (NAS) operating system built on OpenZFS, providing enterprise-grade data management, protection, and sharing capabilities. This documentation covers multiple product versions with both current stable releases and development content.

## Version Structure and Navigation

The documentation is organized across multiple version branches with specific hosting paths:

**Note**: TrueNAS no longer uses SCALE/CORE product names in current development. Refer to products as "TrueNAS + Version" (e.g., "TrueNAS 25.04").

## Documentation Types

The TrueNAS documentation includes two main content types for each version:

- **Tutorials**: Step-by-step guides and how-to instructions for accomplishing specific tasks and workflows
  - SCALE versions: `/scaletutorials/`
  - CORE versions: `/coretutorials/`
- **UI Reference**: Detailed interface documentation explaining screens, fields, and configuration options
  - SCALE versions: `/scaleuireference/`
  - CORE versions: `/uireference/`

## LLM Guidance for Version Selection

**Default Version Selection:**
- For general queries without version specification, use TrueNAS 25.04 (current stable) or TrueNAS 13.0 (for CORE-specific queries)
- If users specify a particular version, prioritize that version's documentation

**Product Name Interpretation:**
- **TrueNAS CORE** refers to TrueNAS 13.3 and earlier versions (FreeBSD-based)
- **TrueNAS SCALE** refers to TrueNAS 20.02 and newer versions (Linux-based)
- Current versions (25.04+) are simply called "TrueNAS" without CORE/SCALE distinction

**Version-Specific Queries:**
- When users ask about specific features, check if they exist in the requested version
- Direct users to appropriate version documentation based on their stated needs
